Fronius, together with the GEN24 Plus, presents - The cooling technology of tomorrow

Products and Solutions

16/11/2020

The advantages of active cooling technology speak for themselves and have been proven in countless photovoltaic systems around the world. This is why Fronius will continue to rely on active cooling in the future and has further developed and optimised it to meet today’s and tomorrow’s needs.

With the new Fronius GEN24 Plus inverter, Fronius presents a cooling system that delivers even more efficient cooling, that is not only particularly space-saving and compact, but also contributes to sustainable energy production.

How active cooling works with the Fronius GEN24 Plus

We are already familiar with the advantages of active cooling technology: above all, these are the longer service life of the inverters, the higher yield and lower maintenance costs. The particular challenges when developing the Fronius GEN24 Plus inverter series were to deliver a cooling system that offers an even better cooling effect and at the same time is particularly space-saving and compact.

The result is a highly efficient cooling system consisting of a heat sink and a fan that optimally cools the power electronics inside the inverter. The heart of the cooling system is an innovative fan housing, which is integrated into a recess of a die-cast aluminium heat sink with specially arranged cooling fins.

(see figure below)

In this system, the fan housing ensures ideal pressure conditions, allowing optimal intake of ambient air and air flow through the system. Warm air is discharged to the outside via the cooling fins. The electronic components in the inverter remain constantly cool regardless of the external ambient temperature.

Greater flexibility in system design and installation

The innovative fan housing gives the Fronius GEN24 Plus its particularly flat and compact shape, which offers numerous advantages in terms of installation, handling and cost-effectiveness. Thanks to the active cooling system, the inverters are extremely flexible and can be mounted in a variety of ways depending on the environmental conditions. Whether vertically, horizontally, flat or side by side – none of these is a problem for the Fronius GEN24 Plus.

The Fronius GEN24 Plus also boasts flexibility in terms of system design: thanks to active cooling, the inverter’s MPP trackers can handle a higher amperage, allowing more parallel strings to be connected.

Tests prove the advantages of active cooling technology

Tests have shown that, compared to a standard fan (0.6 m3 / min.), 250% (1.5 m3 / min.) of the air volume can now be passed through the system with this innovative cooling technology. This makes it possible to dissipate heat quickly and efficiently from the electronic components via the cooling fins, even with very high ambient temperatures. This results in a very homogeneous temperature distribution at the heat sink.

(see the figure below)

How active cooling technology contributes to effective energy production

The temperature inside the inverter can be kept even lower thanks to the innovative cooling technology. This increases the service life of the power electronics and inverter, thereby contributing to sustainable and effective energy production. Since the inverters can be placed in direct sunlight, no additional heat-shielding measures, such as shading roofs, are necessary. This conserves resources and also the budget. Last but not least, the fan consumes significantly less power, which also contributes to sustainable energy production.
