Solar energy - safe & low-cost power supply

While many areas with unstable grids primarily use diesel generators to maintain the energy supply, photovoltaics are becoming increasingly accepted as a low-cost alternative. Solar energy is a stable and inexpensive resource which, in combination with storage solutions, makes sense not only economically but also in terms of CO2 balances.

Advantages of solar backup systems

  • Security of supply – A solar backup system ensures a secure energy supply even in the event of an unstable power supply or grid failure.
  • Stable energy costs – With a photovoltaic system, there are no running costs, which often increase constantly. They therefore guarantee stable costs over the entire service life of the system.
  • No noise pollution or unpleasant odours – Unlike a diesel generator, photovoltaic systems are quiet and clean.
  • Improve the CO2 balance – With a sustainable energy supply, harmful emissions are reduced and environmental regulations can be met.

Security of supply through photovoltaics

A stand-alone photovoltaic system produces electricity independently of the public grid. In the event of a power failure, the system automatically decouples itself from the grid and creates its own, self-contained network (MicroGrid).

This means that the supply of power can be guaranteed even without other components, such as a diesel generator.

The convenient alternative to the diesel generator

Stand-alone photovoltaic systems have a significant advantage over diesel-powered emergency power generators: they generate clean, odourless electricity, quietly.

Particularly in remote hotel complexes and communities, personal comfort and sustainability play a major role in addition to security of supply. A supply of solar power can significantly reduce both odour and noise pollution and ultimately CO2 emissions.

How a solar backup system works
Photovoltaic modules Modules can be mounted on large roofs or in open spaces and generate solar power when exposed to the sun. This electricity must be converted from direct current to alternating current by the inverter before it can be used.
1
Inverter The inverter is the control centre of every photovoltaic system. It converts the generated direct current into alternating current and provides the self-contained network (MicroGrid) with as much solar power as possible.
2
Energy storage Excess energy from the photovoltaic system can be temporarily stored in the accumulator. Its main purpose is to continue to use the energy generated throughout the day during the evening and at night or in times with low sunlight.
3
Battery inverter (inverter charger) A battery inverter (inverter charger) is the connecting piece between inverters and energy storage units. With the help of battery inverters, the solar power produced can be temporarily stored in the energy storage unit and also drawn from the battery as needed.

A saving of 80,000 euros in diesel in 20 years

Grid parity of the PV energy is set to be achieved faster than anticipated due to high diesel costs in Sachs Harbour. Consequently, they will have a very low payback time of less than six years, following which the system will be paid off, enabling the residents of Sachs Harbour to save more than 80,000 euros in diesel costs in the first 20 years.
